Support Thread: Connecting to Windows 10 works, but not for Windows 7? Unit does not appear in “Device Manager” on host-PC?

Purpose: To diagnose the common issue of a user being able to connect to an Inertial Labs Inertial Navigation System using Windows 10 but when using a different operating system, such as Windows 7, the unit will not connect.

Dear Support Team,

I received the INS-D unit we ordered;

I connected to a laptop with Windows 10 and following the installation procedure I could connect through RS422 or RS232 to one of the USB ports on the laptop.

However, I cannot connect with my older laptop having Windows 7. In the “Device Manager” window in the “other Devices” category “FT230X Basic UART” appears with a yellow exclamation mark i.e. the device has no drivers installed. On my computer with Windows 10, the INS would appear under “Ports (COM & LPT)” but this does not appear to be the case with my PC with Windows 7?

When I try to update the USB driver by directing the installer to USB drivers on the disk on key you supplied I receive a message “windows was unable to install your FT320X Basic UART”.

Can you please advise on how to connect with older laptops?

Hello! I would be more than happy to help you.

This is a common issue on Windows 7 with the self-signed drivers. To fix the issue, you should disable the driver signature. You can follow these following instructions:

Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Permanently and Completely

You can try commands to disable driver signature enforcement permanently and completely.

Step 1. Open a Command Prompt with admin privileges. In Windows 10/8.1/8, press the Windows key + X and select “Command Prompt (admin)”. In Windows 7/XP/Vista, you can type “command prompt” in the Start search box, right-click on “Command Prompt” in the result and select “run as administrator”.

Step 2. Type the following command and press the Enter key:

bcdedit /set testsigning on

You should receive the “The operation completed successfully” message.

In our test, you can also type the commands as below:

Please press after each line.

bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON

Step 3. Close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer. Now you can install any unsigned drivers without problems.
